Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was introduced to art from her grandmother Denise. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. Although DuVernay lived within Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual member of the Jury. Following her disappointment with journalism due to the work she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from college. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
